Pop Up Camper Roof Repair in North Charleston

Pop Up Camper Roof Repair in North Charleston

Pop-up campers take a beating in the Lowcountry. Between summer thunderstorms, salt air off the harbor, and the kind of UV exposure that fades paint in a season, a canvas or fiberglass roof on your fold-out camper can deteriorate faster here than almost anywhere else in the country. If you’ve pulled your camper out of storage and spotted water stains, soft spots, or visible tears, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common calls the team at Wando Roofing Charleston fields from North Charleston residents every spring.

How to Repair a Pop Up Camper Roof in North Charleston?

Pop-up campers typically have one of two roof types: a fabric canvas that folds down with the sides, or a hard fiberglass cap that sits on top of the raised unit. The repair process is different for each, but the diagnostic process is the same — find every gap, crack, or saturated section before you patch anything, because covering a wet substrate traps moisture and speeds up rot.

Canvas roofs: If the fabric has torn or developed pinholes, start by cleaning the surface with a mild soap solution and letting it dry completely — in North Charleston’s humidity, that can take longer than you’d expect, so give it at least 48 hours of low-humidity weather. Apply a canvas-specific seam sealer like Stormsure or a dedicated RV fabric repair product to small tears. For larger tears (anything over three inches), cut a patch from matching canvas material with a two-inch overlap on all sides, apply contact cement to both surfaces, press firmly, and seal all edges. Flex Seal tape, while popular, does not hold up well to the accordion-folding action of a pop-up mechanism — it cracks and peels within a season.

Fiberglass roofs: Hairline cracks and small punctures respond well to fiberglass repair kits — the same type used on boat hulls. Clean the damaged area, sand it lightly to create adhesion, mix your resin and hardener per the manufacturer’s ratio, apply, and finish with gelcoat to protect the patch from UV. Soft spots in the fiberglass usually mean the wood substrate underneath has rotted. That’s a structural repair: cut out the damaged section, replace the wood core with marine-grade plywood (not standard plywood — it won’t survive the humidity here), and glass over it with two layers of fiberglass cloth.

Lap sealant around hardware: Regardless of roof type, reseal every screw head, vent, and roof fixture annually. Dicor self-leveling lap sealant is the industry standard for RVs. In the Charleston climate, UV degrades sealant fast — what looks intact in October may be cracked and channeling water by April.

If the damage covers more than a third of the roof surface, or if you find soft spots extending into the sidewalls, the scope of the repair has moved past a weekend DIY project. At that point, calling a professional roofing company familiar with waterproofing and structural repairs makes more practical sense than continuing to patch.

Why the Lowcountry Climate Creates Specific Problems?

North Charleston sits at an average annual humidity of around 74%, and summer heat index values regularly exceed 105°F. That combination stresses any roofing material — residential or recreational. The NOAA Climate Data for the Charleston area shows the region averages over 52 inches of rain per year, much of it falling as intense, concentrated storms rather than steady drizzle.

For pop-up campers specifically, that means any sealant failure becomes a water intrusion problem fast. Canvas fabrics that aren’t treated with a hydrophobic coating will absorb moisture and begin to mold within a few weeks of storage. Fiberglass that isn’t sealed will micro-crack through repeated thermal expansion and contraction — 95°F summer days followed by 40°F winter nights put real stress on roofing materials.

Store your camper under cover or with a tightly fitted, breathable cover that allows moisture vapor to escape. Leaving it under a solid tarp that traps condensation underneath is actually worse than leaving it uncovered.

When a Roofer Makes More Sense Than DIY?

Pop-up camper roof repairs overlap with residential roofing in a few important ways — waterproofing membranes, substrate replacement, and sealant work are all tasks that professional roofers handle daily. For roof repair Charleston SC work, the materials and techniques transfer directly.

Where a roofer specifically helps is in assessing how far water damage has spread. We’ve seen campers come in with what looked like a four-inch soft spot that turned into a two-foot area of delaminated substrate once the surface layer was removed. Finding that before you’ve bought $50 in patch materials saves time and money. Our team has handled enough water intrusion cases on both residential roofs and recreational structures to recognize the signs quickly.

The types of roof repair we perform on homes in this area — patching, substrate replacement, waterproofing membrane application — translate well to larger camper roof repairs, particularly fiberglass hard-top units. If your camper has a fiberglass roof with widespread damage, it’s worth getting an assessment from someone who works with these materials regularly.

What It Costs in 2026?

For DIY canvas repairs, budget roughly $30–$80 for sealant, patch material, and contact cement. Fiberglass repair kits run $25–$60 depending on size. If you’re paying a professional for labor, roof repair cost Charleston for a partial camper roof repair typically ranges from $200–$600 depending on the scope of the substrate damage. Full roof reskinning on a hard-top unit can run $800–$1,500.

According to RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association) data, deferred maintenance on RV roofs is the leading cause of interior water damage, which dramatically raises repair costs. A $40 tube of lap sealant used every 12 months can prevent a $3,000 interior restoration job.

Maintenance to Prevent Future Damage

Check the roof twice a year — once before camping season (March for most North Charleston residents) and once after the last trip of the year. Look for any sealant that has turned brittle, cracked, or pulled away from hardware. Clean canvas roofs with a product specifically rated for RV canvas — dish soap and bleach solutions degrade the waterproof treatment on the fabric.

For fiberglass hard-tops, a coat of RV roof wax in spring adds UV protection and makes the surface easier to clean after trips through pine pollen season. GAF roofing materials and Owens Corning products, which we use on residential roofs, are built to resist this climate — but camper-specific materials still need routine attention that residential roofing often doesn’t require, simply because campers flex and move.

If you want more general guidance on roofing maintenance for your home as well, our roof maintenance Charleston SC page covers what we recommend seasonally. You can also find answers to common material and repair questions in our roofing FAQs. And if you’ve dealt with your camper roof but started noticing issues on your house, our blog covers a wide range of residential roofing topics specific to the Lowcountry.

After calling two other companies and not getting a response, I tried Wando Roofing. Shawn was at my house in less than half an hour. He assessed my roof problem and had a crew out to do repairs the next day. They did an outstanding job, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From now on, I won’t call anyone else. I highly recommend them!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Billy, for your kind words and recommendation! We're thrilled to hear that Shawn and our crew were able to assist you promptly and deliver outstanding results. We look forward to serving you again, should you need us in the future!

I cannot say enough positive things about Wando Roofing!!! The process of getting a whole new roof seemed kind of intimidating for me at first, but after Shawn the owner came over and took the time to explain everything clearly and offered a free estimate, then I decided to hire them. They showed up on time for all appointments, and the cost was low and affordable. The quality of their work is absolutely superior!!! They responded quickly to any issues. They cleaned up all the mess and debris very well. Wando Roofing has made this entire process rewarding and exciting (for me as the homeowner). The Wando Roofing team is fast and highly professional! They even went above and beyond to make sure I was happy by installing a new rain diverting piece for my back porch, and Ian their repair man did an amazing job installing it, plus fixing some previous vinyl siding damages and a gutter issue. I am so very impressed by this company. I highly recommend Wando Roofing! This team of hard workers is extremely professional!!!
Response from the owner:Wow Angela, thank you so much for this incredible review! We’re beyond grateful for your kind words and so happy to hear that your experience with Wando Roofing Charleston was such a positive one. It means a lot that you felt supported and informed throughout the whole roof replacement process—we always aim to make things as smooth and stress-free as possible. We’ll be sure to pass along your compliments to Shawn, Ian, and the rest of the team—they’ll be thrilled to know they made a difference. Going above and beyond for our customers is what we strive for, and hearing that we were able to do that for you truly makes our day. Thank you again for trusting us with your home and for taking the time to share your experience. It was an absolute pleasure working with you! Warm regards, The Wando Roofing Charleston Team

Discovered roof leakage from Hurricaine Matthew. Had someone come out to repair the leak after the storm. Recently discovered they not do a good job. The roof had been leaking around the bathroom vent pipe for some time. Did not know until the bathroom ceiling had water stains. Called other roofing contractors but could not come out until next week. I called Wando Roofing and Shaun came out the same day. He quoted me a price for the repair and I thought it was very reasonable. The repair was done the next day and the repair person did an outstanding job. He repaired the rotten wood underneath the shingles added water shielding and new pipe boot and of course replaced the shingles. Couldn't tell the roof was repaired. The repair was better than the original roofing! Give them a call!!
Response from the owner:Thank you Jef so much for taking the time to share your experience. We’re so glad we could step in and help out, especially after such a frustrating situation with the previous roof repair. It means a lot to hear that Shawn and our team were able to provide prompt service and a solid repair that exceeded your expectations! We always aim to treat every home like it’s our own, so hearing your kind words truly makes our day. If you ever need anything in the future, don’t hesitate to reach out — and thanks again for the recommendation! — The Wando Roofing Charleston Team

I had an experience with Wando Roofing that I have never had with other companies in the past 20 years; be they roofers, carpenters painters, etc. I called Wando Roofing at 6:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning, desperately in search of somebody to repair a leak that occurred during a period of heavy rainfall the night before. Shawn returned my call within 30 minutes and was out to make repairs the same day. If you are fed up with no-shows and empty promises, call Wando Roofing. Jeff C.
Response from the owner:Thank you for the wonderful words. It was a pleasure working with you!

I have leaks on my roof, other roof contractors did not want to do the repair, they tried to get me to redo the whole roof which were unnecessary because my roof is only 8 years old. Wando roof, the owner Shawn Bullard was honest, he gave me a price for the repair which is reasonable. His worker was at my house the next day before the promised time, very pleasant and went to work and finished the repair in no time. I would highly recommend this company.
Response from the owner:Thank you Suthry so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience! We’re so glad Shawn and the team were able to provide the honest, reliable service you were looking for. We believe in offering the right roofing solution—not just the most expensive one—so it means a lot to hear that came through. We’ll be sure to pass your compliments along to the crew! If you ever need anything in the future, don’t hesitate to reach out. Thanks again for recommending us!

We have used Wando Roofing several time over past 4 years for our primary residence as well as a rental home that had some storm damage to the roof and gutters. They are incredibly responsive, always show up on time and have been very reasonable for their quotes. The crew that comes out is extremely polite/helpful and once actually did me the additional favor of paining a piece of trim I could not reach while they were there! Most importantly though they do not propose additional work or inflate what actually needs to be done, as we have found with other roofing companies. I highly recommend you use them and you will not be disappointed! Realtors- they are a gem in times where the schedule is tight!!
Response from the owner:Thank you Kathy so much for your kind words and continued trust in Wando Roofing Charleston! We truly appreciate the opportunity to work on both your primary residence and rental property over the years. It means a lot to hear that our team has been responsive, punctual, and fair in our pricing—that's exactly the standard we strive for every day. We're especially glad the crew could go the extra mile for you (including that trim painting!). And thank you for pointing out our commitment to honest assessments—we believe in doing what’s right, not just what’s profitable. Your recommendation means the world to us, especially to realtors who depend on reliability and efficiency. Thanks again for your support!
